Class Description
Using stories featuring African wildlife, students will gain early reading skills. Activities include language and vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and learning great facts about wildlife. They will also learn introductory map skills. This on-line course combines direct instruction, videos, presentations, discussions, movement, and instructor created wildlife books for a variety of learning experiences. Teaching style is customized to meet students’ needs. Students will need to have knowledge of the English language, and be able to be instructed in an on-line format. Each 40 minute class follows the same lesson format, but features a different book and focuses on different African animals.
Lesson 1: Elephants

Using African safari photos of previous safaris, students will complete vocabulary activities utilizing video chat. |

With instructor guidance, students will read the book, Ellie Elephant and locate the setting on the map of Africa. |
6 minutes |
Discuss unique facts about elephant behavior and lifestyle. Questions will be asked and students will be encouraged to interact with the instructor and each other through video chat. |

We will share stories about elephants in the wild, why elephants are becoming endangered, what are the threats, and learn what steps are available to help promote elephant survival. |
10 minutes |
Students will compose a short sentence prompted from the information/structure presented in the text. The instructor will guide the students as they write it on paper and teach them to check their sentence for standard conventions. Students will read their sentence aloud during the video chat. |
Lesson 2: Lions
